Becoming a good team member

An employee is stronger as a group than as an individual worker: the team members must possess the qualities required to meet the results in time. Some of these qualities are described here.

The idea of working as a unit or a team is very important for successful completion of projects while working in organizations. Employers seek for the qualities of team management while hiring employees. In every working unit, there are teams to accomplish specific tasks. Every team comprises group of employees that intends to achieve desired goals and objectives. The theme behind team formation is that an employee is stronger as a group than as an individual worker. The team members must possess the qualities required to meet the results in time. Some of these qualities are described as follows.

Adaptable
You should be able to adapt to the requirements of your role in the team. It is not necessary that you always get the desired part of the assigned task. Even if you don’t like the work, you will have to do it for the team. There could be circumstances in which you don’t perform well in your favorite fields and you are made to switch your work in the team. Team members should be able to learn from their experience and should share the knowledge among team members.

Collaborative
Collaboration is very much similar to cooperation with the slight difference that the former means working together with more passion. Collaboration ensures that the work of members can be integrated to complete the project. The team members should focus on benefits of team instead of individuals only. The members shouldn’t perceive each others as competitors instead they should appreciate each other’s performance. Collaboration takes team to higher level with individuals acting as steps of the ladder leading towards ultimate goal.

Reliable
The reliability ensures that each member does his part of the work with dedication and sincerity in the allotted time span. The leader of the team should not be thinking of assigning same task to two different members if it can be done by one of them as it shows that leader doesn’t rely on individual members. Each member should take responsibility on his own shoulders for his part of the work and should be able to deliver when needed. Members should keep their promise and should advise what they practice themselves.

Communicative
Communication skills are very important tool of a team member. A good team member is active in listening to his teammates, is involved in team discussions to give suggestions when needed and has the ability to share his precious views on a certain topic. It is essential to show respect to senior members in the team. During debates, if you don’t agree to a point, then don’t show rude behavior. Proper communication protocols should be followed in technical work. Keep the team members alert all the times by sharing the important pieces of information.

Selflessness
Good team members have a good inner self. They fight for the benefits of the team instead for their own benefits. They are loyal to the team. As a selfless team member, you should do well from your side without expecting from others the same. Be generous in forgiving the mistakes of team members if these are not critical. Don’t be rude with subordinates if they are at fault instead you should instruct them politely. Don’t boast about your contributions in the team.

Exemplary Performance
Your work must set the standards for the other team members. Show other team members what they can achieve with hard work and dedication. Guide team members to a proper path towards success in a mission.

Well Prepared
As a team member, you should assess where the team is heading. The decisions have to be taken in time and necessary prerequisites of tasks have to be met. Be aware of the situations all the time. Become familiar with the tools required to accomplish the task and get the tools as soon as possible. Do research about the facts and figures of the mission and make strategy to break the project into parts and assign these tasks to team members.

Positive Attitude
Positive approach towards the success in a mission requires enthusiasm, spirit and hard work. Team members should be willing to support leader in any case and have to show the dedication to perform their duties even if the work is distasteful for them. Subordinates have to believe in strategies of their leader and to support him positively. A team leader should be brave to fight for the success, willing to take risks when required and mentally strong to cope with critical situations. Even in case of defeat, leader doesn’t blame his group members for their inferior performance. He takes the responsibility of loss on himself.

Committed
A team member has to dedicate himself to fight with the challenges in achieving the aims of whole group. Members should analyze themselves regarding their commitment to the work. Some kind of negative thoughts of losing in the end or suffering from downfall can distract the team members from their duties.

Load Sharing
Employees in a group should share load at least equal to other members if not more than theirs’. A good team member doesn’t run away from the work assigned to him. He doesn’t ask leader to give him relaxed duties. He should take the burden of the team on his shoulders.

Competent
The workers in a group should possess the skills to complete a task. They should deliver whenever their leader assigns them their part of work. They should be experienced in their field. The leader can analyze the specialization of each worker and distribute the load accordingly to improve efficiency. If a worker is naturally good at something, he should be assigned work in his area of interest to increase chances of success.

Strong But Controlled Emotions
Emotions and enthusiasm boost the spirit of the team. The members should motivate others with optimistic approach rather than spreading pessimism and negative thinking in their unit. Motivated team members keep on infusing positive thinking among their colleagues to achieve something fruitful. But emotions should be controlled to avoid team from falling.

Fighting Spirit
Great teams always fight till the end to win the battle. Each member leads by an example and never gives up on his work. The cowardly behaviors of turning back on assigned duties, running away from the game, showing tired nature and giving up are never expected from a brave team. Whether it is a game, a battle or an educational project, team members always fight with their full skills to meet their ambitions.

Problem Solving
Solution oriented team members strategize to minimize the loss if chances of success look gloomy. They don’t blame their colleagues to create problems for the team. They always propose possible solutions to deal with the challenges.
Overall a good team member is always a reason for success for team instead of a stone that blocks path towards the destination.
