Financial crises and job search
We all have to remember one simple rule of life: that change is the only permanent thing in one’s life. We must always be prepared for it and embrace it when it happens. Economic crises can happen to any country and any organization at any time in life. When economic crises hit a country, two situations may occur,(i) draught for jobs and (ii) downsizing in companies leading to more joblessness. Downsizing is becoming a regular practice by lot of companies whether local or international. In today's fast paced world, it has become the only pragmatic solution for companies to cut down their cost and increase their efficiency .Due to one reason or the other, if you have lost your job, cursing the reason for it won't take you anywhere, the important issue is how you land yourself another job .
- First of all please remember losing a job can happen to anyone, even to the very best of us. Please don't blame yourself for it, don't curse yourself or your fate and don't think about it every minute of your day.Accept the change as fast as you can as “tending to injury leads to a fast cure". Do not bottle your pain and do not pretend that everything is "OK”. It is quite natural to feel anxiety, anger and uncertainty so express your sorrow but do not live in it.
- When your company decides to let you go, don’t take it personally. If it was a result of downsizing, it is quite common in corporate world. Always leave with a positive note, even if you are boiling from inside. Ask for a reference letter and experience certificate and, if possible, arrange for a small meeting with your boss and discuss positively about the reasons of your dismissal. Asking about your professional weaknesses and drawbacks will actually be a benefit to you, you will have a chance to polish yourself and enhance your skills.
- Now that you have tended to yourself emotionally and probably know the reasons of your layoff as well, you need to move to next level, i.e., find yourself a job as quickly as possible. It is not easy especially in economic recession time, however it is the only choice you have so get working on it.
- Job search takes time minimum of four to six months. In the meanwhile, make a fresh resume and make a list of skills you need to improve and learn.
- It canalso be taken as a time to change field/careers if you like to. Keep all your options open. You can learn some new skills and then blend them with your existingknowledge to enter a new field if you like.
- Make yourself a fresh resume. If you don't have any professional to write it for you, then do it yourself by putting your time and energy into it. Develop your personal statement and goals in a more innovativestyle.
- Use internet effectively, make a professional profile on LinkedIn, use Facebook to browse through job search websites. Call people and tell them you are available for work. Do not sound desperate but ask for the help. Don't forget to look through newspaperclassified.
- Many companies, while downsizing, do not terminate their employees immediately rather they send you on an unpaid leave for few months. After that, they give you experience certificate including your pay for the last unpaid months. If that is the case, you do not have to mention your layoff in your resume at all. However, if your situation is different, you still do not have to use words like "fired from previous job" or"terminated from last job" in your resume. Only mention the duration of your job rather than the reasons for leaving it (leave it for interview). Stress on the position you are applying for and explain how you are eligible for it.
- Don't indulge in a lie especially in your resume. If you do not want to mention your previous job skip it if you can. Wrong information on paper will be a proof of your lie that you will never be able to change.
- If you are called for an interview, you should exactly know what you mentioned in your resume and prepare for the interview accordingly. Practice your answers. Feeling sad or angry on losing a job is quite normal, but please leave these emotions home when you go for the interview. If you are asked for the reasons of your termination, be honest about it, keep it straight and simple. Stick to one story, no matter how many companies you give interview to. Never spit venom against your last employer as companies like loyalty. Keep your answers positive explaining that last job was a huge learning experience that is why you think yourself eligible for the position you have applied for. Stress that you are a challenge taker. Keep focus on your experience and skills.

- While looking for a job, spend the time wisely, keep yourself active and busy learning other skills. It will portray you as an effective, creative and innovative person.
