Power Loom Workers Strike after underpayment of wages - July 27, 2011

Power loom workers in the industrial city of Faisalabad went on a strike in order to force the power loom owners to pay them according to law. It has been estimated that around 15000 power looms were shut after workers resorted to strike. While Government had increased minimum wage to PKR7,000 in 2010, most of the workers are still paid around 4500 to 5000 rupees. Workers were rather persecuted and beaten by power loom owners’ men. Moreover, it is mentioned that an agreement was signed with the labour movement by government authorities (not clear whether employers were a party to this agreement) to raise wages by 13.3%, however this was not implemented as well.
