EOBI and Unemployed - July 25, 2011

The Employees Old Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) has expanded its scope and now this welfare scheme is extended to unemployed people as well. This new initiative ensures that all people (whether they are employed or not) get social security benefits after attaining retirement age or in case of invalidity/disability.

Earlier only workers of government, semi-government, autonomous and private organizations were provided social security benefits however this initiative allows all people (whether they are employed or not and whether their organization has registered them with EOBI) can register themselves after paying monthly contribution of PKR420. The new system is computerized where anyone can register him/herself. Moreover this scheme has also been extended to include all enterprises employing 5 or more workers. Workers employed in financial sector and carpet industries are now also part of this scheme.
