Labour Force Survey 2011 and Unemployment Rate - August 2, 2011

Pakistan Labour Force Survey, released on August 01, 2011, has identified unemployment rate in the country as 6% compared to 5.6% last year. The current size of the labour force is 57.3 million. While unemployment rate for men is constantly increasing, female unemployment has decreased, a positive trend and thanks legislative measures like fixation of 10% quota for women in government jobs and anti-sexual harassment law. On the other hand, while urban areas are experiencing high unemployment, due to the energy crisis, unemployment in rural areas is decreasing mainly due to increase in agricultural commodity prices and support provided by government to this sector. Agriculture sector is still the largest sector employing around 45% of the labour force.
