Gender Equality for Decent Employment - September 21, 2011

A new ILO Project, Gender Equality for Decent Employment (GEDE) funded by Canadian International Development Agency is planning to hold 39 three-day workshops in the country to train about 800 journalists and 300 journalism/mass communication students from the top ten universities in Pakistan. During a recent workshop, it was emphasized that media should stop treating women only as sex objects and should shift its focus from sensational to developmental news by hiring the best presenters rather than the prettiest. Besides creating equal opportunities for women, this project aims at capacity building of the media to raise awareness of working women’s issues through gender sensitive reporting. This project would enhance the skills of around 6000 poor working women in rural and urban areas of selected districts.
